YWCA Wraps Up Its Year with Bras and Bucks (and you can still help)

The YWCA of the Greater Capital Region held its Resourceful Women's Luncheon and its Brava event closer than usual this year, but it didn't hurt donations.

More than 500 bras were collected at Brava, a second-annual event on Nov. 4, where local writers shared stories of their relationship with their bras as a way to draw attention to that being a needed item for residents of the Y.

At the Resourceful Women's Luncheon on Oct. 11, organizers did a call-out for donations and collected $8,000 in just 15 minutes. That's the power of the ask! A record-breaking total of nearly $47,000 was raised at that annual event, which honors women who are doing good in the Capital Region, including our own Women@Work members: Mayleen Rivera, New York State Department of Health (emerging professional); Jade Lewis-Gibson, Jade's Hair Envy and Sheilah Sable, Call Sheilah! (entrepreneurs); Christine Nealon, Troy Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (health and human services); and Victoria Yusko, No Bottom Left Behind Diaper Bank (philanthropy). Congratulations!

Inspired and want to help the YWCA? You can still donate new bras to the YWCA by dropping them off at 21 First St. in Troy, or making a contribution toward the purchase of bras at http://www.fundabilities.org/Brava! The Town Shop, a well-known lingerie retailer operating in Manhattan, will provide the bras at wholesale cost.

A book worth picking up

If you missed the talk by author and The Wall Street Journal management news editor Joann S. Lublin at the New York State Writers Institute on Dec. 6, you missed a great opportunity to hear about her book, "Earning It: Hard-Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World."

But you haven't missed a chance to pick up your copy, which includes inspiring stories of hard-won success by more than 50 powerful women in the C-suite of some of America's largest companies. Her book is a refreshing mix of career advice (from women who have made it) with honest stories that discuss real challenges facing women in their careers, such as having male employees view collaboration as indecisiveness or wrestling with pay gap and sexual harassment.
Pick up a copy for yourself and see your work life reflected in its pages or give the book to a recent graduate — female and male — to help them navigate the work world with open eyes.
