GBCC seeks Corporate Participation in upcoming Tour de Grand Bahama.
The stag is set for the classic cycling event, the Tour de Grand Bahama.
On Friday, the Grand Bahama Cyclist Club and Ministry of Tourism Department in Grand Bahama met to announce tour event, February 4-5.
GBCC President Kenton Roker gave credit to Charlene Wright, who introduced the idea of cycling event that would raise funds for the less fortunate. Proceeds will continue to go toward Operation Christmas Child, an organization that donates school supplies while spreading the Gospel.
“We took that idea and it’s been turned into a major cycling event for Grand Bahama. On February 4-5 we’ll be staging a two-day free event and cycling classic.
“On Saturday (February 4) we’ll have a our time trials which will go along East Sunrise Highway and then through the downtown area.
He further informed that on Sunday, February 5, the grand finale be the three-stages of road racing. The first stage will be going from McClean’s Town to West End, the second, from the High Rock Police Station to West End and the third from the foot of the Casuarina Bridge to West End.
While the individual cyclists put on a show, Roker announced that spectators would also be involved.
“What we decided to add this year is a corporate challenge. We have a special event for them that Saturday morning, a three-mile time trial, a criterium.
“They can do it as a relay where they can put five persons on one team. But for that company to win all five persons must cross the finish line before the other company.”
“It’s just not about racing. It is also about healthy lifestyles and cycling is a good way to stay fit among activities,” said Roker.
The competition is expected to be a tight one. Roker announced that along with Bahamian cyclists, there is expected to be a healthy dose of competition coming from the United States.
“We’re looking forward to this being a grand event. We have a number of persons traveling from overseas, the United States and from throughout The Bahamas.
“We have a few teams that are coming out of the Florida area. Florida Vellow is 14-member team. We have AeroPro. The head coach (Roy Albury) of AeroPro was here last year I believe and he was the overall winner. So he decided to bring his entire team, a team of 12, to help him try and retain his championship.
“We also have Tara “The Firecracker” Appraiser, she was the overall female winner. She’ll be coming in along with her son who is a Florida junior champion. Also, the Florida time trial champions will be here. So we’re going to have a number of great cyclists here come in.”
National cycling champion for the Bahamas, Anthony “Biggie” Colebrooke will also grace the streets of Grand Bahama once again. Last year Colebrooke outlasted the Columbians, the American junior national team.
Assistant Sports Tourism Manager Jay Philippe said that the MOTGB was once again proud to sponsor the ever-growing race.
“Seeing that this is the first event of the year, we wanted to make sure that we got off to a great start so that it will dictate what happens throughout the course of the year. And like what Mr. Roker would have mentioned, we have a number of participants who are traveling for the purpose of this event. There are about 30 persons coming from Florida, persons traveling from Nassau and also Abaco.
“So here it is an excellent opportunity to promote the island of Grand Bahama through sports and we see this as an incredible time for this island. We’re looking forward to the competitors coming out and competing and we’re pleading to the public to be a part of this event. Come out and support.”
Registration for the event can be done online at Bahamas Cycling Federation.com. The registration fee stands at 85 dollars for all three of the events (time trial, criterium and road-race). Registration for the corporate companies is 50 dollars.
The event will culminate with the trophy presentations in West End.
